There was a time in the 1980s and early 1990s when Bermondsey Street was all but deserted. Warehouses were full of antiques, and the Newsagents close to the junction with Tanner Street was the only shop (it hasn’t had a name on the front for 30+ years!).
At weekends, you could walk the length of Bermondsey Street in the middle of the road with the confidence that no car would force you onto the pavement.
